Hello, my name is Vanessa and I just joined nuestros ranchos. My maternal side is from Jalisco. My grandfather Leopoldo Salcedo Escoto was born in Degollado, Jalisco to Jose Manuel Salcedo Camarena and Delfina Escoto Aceves and my grandmother Francisca Villaseñor Villaseñor was born in La Barca, Jalisco to Salvador Villaseñor Ochoa and Maria Carmen Villaseñor Estrada. I'd like to know more about my family and where I came from and get a better grasp of who they were. I am excited to learn and contribute in anyway that I can.

    Welcome, Vanessa!

I don't know how much you know about how to use familysearch, but it is a fantastic resource.

Doing a quick search of it with the info you gave us, I believe I found your grandfather in the 1930 US Federal Census.

    https://familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=20&query=%2Bgivenn…~

That image gives us your grandfather, great-grandfather and great-grandmother's ages. It is important to always use real documents and to write down when and where you got your information. We call it "documenting your sources." Otherwise nothing is certain. Starting with an approximate year they were each born should allow you to search the images of familysearch for their baptisms or civil registration.

Below is the link to the image-by-image register of the baptisms in Degollado in the time frame your grandfather would have been born. It may take you some time, but I would star around 1921 and go through 1923. As you get more used to the documents you get faster and you find how much fun this can be!

    Good luck!

Yes, thank you. I appreciate your help. However, I should have been a little more clearer. I wasn't looking for those individuals specifically, just wished to learn more about my family in general as the line goes higher. Familysearch is my best friend. :) As for my grandfather's Salcedo line, I have tracked up to my sixth great-grandfather whose name was Joaquin Salcedo who was born abt 1751 near Atotonilco El Alto. Approximately in Atotonilco El Alto he married Maria Segunda Barajas who was born in Jun 1751 in Atotonilco El Alto. Her parents were Agustin Barajas and Petrona De La Cruz. Her baptism record has her listed as a 'coyote'. They (Joaquin and Maria Segunda) had six children that I am aware of. That's as far as I am able to go with that line. As for my maternal line, I have the names of all 62 of my 5th great-grandparents. However, I have no stories or know much about them.

I should have worded my intro a little better but I really do appreciate the help. Is there anywhere where I can find local histories or information? I see so many mentions of people being captains and owners of haciendas on these forums but I can never find any information in the documents I look through (i.e. baptism/marriage records) for said information.
