Hello all,
My name is Tony Diaz... I live in Chicago, born and raised on the South Side
(southeast, near the Indiana border). Any South Side Mexicans here with
roots in Zacatecas?
My grandfather was born in or around Momax, about 1890 or so. He emigrated
in 1910 work in the then-booming steel industry here in the city. If anyone
is or has ancestors from this area, any information you can provide to help me
with my budding research project would be much appreciated.

I think one of the great aspects of the group is getting to share in the successes of others such that when we are up against a brick wall, it is inspirational to see someone else make a breakthrough...
Here are my suggestions as to how to proceed.
The best resource is the LDS church and their website familysearch.org. They tend to only index events (baptisms and marriages) prior to 1900 so your grandfather's birth is right at the cusp of that so it would be very helpful to find out what his parents' names were... so:
1. Try to find an older relative who might know what his parents' names were
2. Find his death record in the social security death index and request a copy of his social security application which will list his parents
3. Find his marriage record... where was he married? In Chicago? His marriage record should list his parents
NEXT:
Go to the FILMS section of the site and find the marriages for Momax at the end of the 1800s and try to find his parent's marriage record. It may be that they were married in a neighboring town so you should try towns like Tlaltenango... look in the maps section and see what other towns are nearby. You will find that people often moved, though usually not too far.

I am currently working on Jerez baptism records 439867 and 439868 covering the years 1899 to 1907. If anyone needs a record checked I'd be happy to oblige. I will have them for another 4 weeks.

Hi Linda:
Could you please look for Francisca Cerro(s) born 9 Mar, 1903. Her father
was Preciliano Cerro(s) and her mother was Apolonia Gonzalez.
Francisca was my mother, she used to say that she had been born in "Minillas
de Jerez, Zacatecas" The only Minillas that I have found so far, is a ranch
north of Mezquitic, Jalisco. I have ordered the film for Mezquitic for 1903
but it will be a couple of weeks before I get it. The FHC center will be
closed all of next week, so I am sure that will delay the film a few more
days...

John I went through the entire film and there was not one single Cerro/Cerros or Serra/Serros in the records. Your Mom was not there during 1899 to 1903.. sorry, wish I could have been more help to you.

Hi Linda:
Thank you for your time and effort in trying to find my mother's record. I
appreciate it.
The only Minillas that I have found so far is North of Mezquitic, Jalisco,
very close to the Zacatecas border. I have a film for Mezquitic that starts
in 1903, but the problem is that it begins in November, 1903. My Mom was
born in March. In that film, I found people from "Rancho Minillas",
registered at the church in Mezquitic. I was hoping that the film would
cover the whole year. I have ordered the film that covers January through
October and I think it will be here in a couple of weeks.
